Abbos Kosimov was born Tashkent, Uzbekistan to a musician family.
His older brother Umar Kosimov introduce him to the Honored artist
of Uzbekistan Tuychi Inogomov and Abbos started attending his doyra
school and at the same time attending a special music school.
Abbos's father, Rakhmat Kosimov, enrolled him to this music school.
He also attended doyra school of the famous doyra players Brothers
Islamovs. Abbos entered College of Culture and
Music and graduated in 1988. He learned doyra
from master of doyra Mamurjon Vahabov during this time. In
1989, Abbos entered Tashkent State Institute of Culture. In 1991,
he won the second prize in the Competition of percussion instruments
of Central Asia and Kazakistan. He graduated from Tashkent State
Institute of Culture in 1994.
In 1994, Abbos established his own "ABBOS" school
where he taught talented youth to play doyra. At present time there
are more than 100 students in his school of doyra. From 1994 to 1998
he worked as a teacher in Tashkent State Institute of Culture. In
1998, he established the "ABBOS" group that featured
national music instruments such as karnay, surnay, nogara and qayroq.
The group is very popular not only in their country but also abroad.
In 2001, in honor of the 10th anniversary
of Uzbekistan's Independence Abbos Kosimov was awarded with a medal
for Honored artists of Uzbekistan. From 2001 to 2005 he successfully
participated in many international festivals and concerts, which
were held in the USA, Canada, England, Japan, Germany, France, Belgium,
Luxemburg, Greece, Bangkok, Taiwan, Malaysia, Moscow, Azerbaijan,
Kazakistan,Tajikistan, Kyrgyzistan. Abbos was invited by
the "Ten
Drums"group and "Nan- Huwa" University in Taiwan
and gave lessons on playing the Uzbek national percussion instruments.
In 2005, Abbos moved to the USA. But his group "Abbos"still
performs in Uzbekistan and his brother Ramiz Kosimov manages
it. He met with many talented and well-known musicians and people
of art, such as Steve Wonder, Randy Gloss, Austin Wrinkle, Houman
Pourmehdi, Andrew Grueschow, Adam Rudolph, Zakir Hussain, Giovanni
HIdalgo, Terry Bozzio, Swapan Chaudhuri and many others. Abbos
learned many things from them and they offered support on different
ways to perform his music in United States. Randy Gloss invited Abbos
to his percussion group called "Hand's
OnSemble" which is consist number of talented and
famous musicians. They've performed together in many different festivals
and concerts. In October 2006 Abbos successfully participated
with his group of doyra-players at PASIC 2006 in Austin Texas and
joined Hands OnSemble with other guests Adam Rudolph and Houman Pourmedhi
in a concert.
Abbos has also met with well-known singer
Steve Wonder and they recorded a new song together. Abbos
met Zakir Hussain in 2005 in New York city where they both participated
in the World Music Festival. Zakir offered to work together. Abbos
agreed and eventually they started performing together. They've performed
in many countries such as India, Singapore and Dubai. In this music
trip they met with Terry Bozzio and Giovanni Hidalgo and performed
together. On February 2007 Abbos performed
together with Zakir Hussain in a Stanford University in
San Jose.
Currently Abbos is working on many different kind
of projects, with many musicians to perform and introduce
Uzbek traditional music to the general public. He is currently producing
a new DVD on the doyra, the first of its kind, with Octagonal Madness.
In 1992, I married Umida Kosimova and they have four sons. Abbos
currently resides in Sacramento when in the US. |
